8/20 Burberry’s New CEO: Talented Mr Bailey

Hot news of the day, or night (at least for this side of the Atlantic) is that Christopher Bailey, chief creative director for Burberry since 2001 will also be taking the position of chief executer officer and thus replacing none other than Angela Ahrendts (who is quitting the world of brit luxury for the digital world of Apple).

Mr Bailey, a true force to be reckoned with when it comes to defining british beauty, has proved that the Brit look is not dead and even today the Queen will long live. He was the ingenious persona behind switching an image that what was once a no no trash to a go go cash! And boy did he make it work! The burberry print (whether when worn by Cara Delevigne or even baby Beckham) has never sold more and made the brand experience double digit growth.

So who did what? Was it Bailey’s creativity or Angela’s strategic vision that made Brit rock?  Where does the beauty stop and where does the real business kick in? So far, the financial market seems to be less supportive of Bailey’s skill behind the boardroom, making shares decline quite drasticically earlier today.

However, if he makes it as CEO it might be signalling a new era for the power of creative minds. Here’s hoping that the talented Mr Bailey will make the cut.
