The Ones 2 Watch: L’Inconnu du Lac / Compliance

Both films explore the limits of human nature and our willingness to comply/surrender to our carnal basic insticts or force of law (see Compliance) at any expense. Both indicative of a strong passivity that questions humanity at its basic core.

L’Inconnu du Lac (Cannes)

Although slow at times, it manages to perfectly convey the rythm of summer days by a gay resort (see Grindr a la bucolique). Explicit sexual scenes and lack of any moral hesitation when it comes to sex (or murder) will make you question the basis of a gay culture that might unfortunately be not that far from reality.

Compliance (Sundance)

Based on true events, the film perfectly shows just how far is too far when it comes to prank calling. Violence and sexual assault at a fast food chain somewhere in the States makes it uncomfortable to watch and even more uncomfortable to realize that human naïveté can have no limits.
